Understanding and Utilizing the Cycle of Change

Prochaska Model of Change is also known as the Transtheoretical model (TTM). This is an integrative as well as biopsychosocial model for conceptualizing the process of deliberate behavior of change. The model applies the stages of change in order to integrate some of the most powerful principles and processes of change that originates from the leading theories of counseling and behavior change (Davis, 2006). The principles that form the theory have been subjected to scientific research and intervention development for a period of over 35 years.

The model has five stages of change namely precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. In the precontemplation stage, an individual is not ready for change hence no action is taken in the foreseeable future. Contemplation is the stage where people intend to change in the next six months. Preparation is where people intend to take action in the immediate future preferable the next month. Action is where people have made some specific modifications in their way of life. The final stage is maintenance in which people have made specific changes in their lives and are working hard to prevent relapse. Prochaska model of change is not a linear model due to the fact that individuals can be taken through several stages at the same time. According to Prochaska and Norcross, the process of the model of change is not linear owing to the fact that psychological problems that individuals face vary from one person to another. People can be put into different stages of the model at the same time owing to their unique challenges and experiences.
