Time Spent on Facebook

Facebook has been reported to take an average of 50 minutes each day of its users’ time. The amount of time has led the social media platform tripling its net monthly income to an average of 1.5billion dollars, thanks to its 1.65 billion users. 50 minutes may not seem like a lot of time considering the day has a total of 24 hours. However, considering that people sleep for an average of 8.8 hours each day, work, eat and do other activities, it is pretty significant. Statistics claim that people spend an average of 2.8 hours on television programs and movies, 19 minutes reading, 4 minutes on social media events and 1.07 hours eating and drinking (Stewart 12). 50 minutes thus appears to be a tremendous amount of time.

With increased use of technology and social media, the time spent on Facebook has increased from 40 minutes in 2014 to 50 in the present day. Contrary to rumors, many young people are still using Facebook in comparison to other social media platforms like Twitter and YouTube.  YouTube gets an average of 17 minutes a day while Twitter gets an average of one minute from all its users (Stewart 15).Facebook thus seems to be shining in the face of their competitors.

Facebook, just as any other social media platform could be used for both leisure and business. Sometimes, leisure and business could be combined. It is thus difficult to measure the amount of time spent on either. However, the information that appears top in the News Feed section accounts for the most viewed contents as well as those concentrated upon by most people.
