Role of forensic psychology in wellness

The main role chosen is forensic psychology professional. In the police service, these professionals perform among other roles ensuring staff wellness. Wellness is a goal that should be actively pursued by all professionals. It refers to the condition of being healthy. Wellness is a key pillar in the performance of any organization since unhealthy employees usually underperform and their work output is equally low (Bartol & Bartol, 2012). The main function of a wellness officer is to create a conducive and healthy working environment for all employees. This can be done through counselling sessions to the employees.

The police officers in executing their duties are constantly faced with several challenges that hinge directly on their wellness and psychological stability. There are three potential wellness issues facing the police. First, most of them do not do enough as they should do or as expected of them. Secondly, the lifestyle of the police is constantly facing drastic changes. Third is that a number of employees do not enjoy the service. Thus they lack the enthusiasm that is much needed in order to excellently perform at the work place.

A forensic psychology professional plays a critical role in mitigating these wellness issues. This is because during their training, they amass a great wealth of skills which gives them an upper hand in addressing these matters. These skills include but are not limited to resilience, outstanding communication skills, exceptional decision-making abilities and excellent analytical expertise (Bartol & Bartol, 2012). Through the programs put place, the professional has an opportunity to interact with the police officers at individual sessions. During this time the forensic psychologist can probe the officer patiently and with suppleness. The forensic psychologist can professionally listen to the officer especially given that the police officers are usually wary of talking about the issues affecting them.

According to Weiner (2003), this will ensure the police officers maintain a healthy state of mind that will see them provide their optimum service to the nation. The forensic psychologist also needs to understand the changing lifestyle of the police. This is because unlike the traditional norm, a number of officers are currently suffering from obesity. The forensic psychologist should guide such officers through the appropriate nutritional guidelines and thereafter help them make an appropriate decision.

Lastly, given that most officers suffer from stigma, they rarely enjoy their profession. This is because over the years most people have developed a negative attitude towards the police. Most people brand them as corrupt and irresponsible. The forensic psychologist should use the relevant skills to help the officers regain a confidence in their profession. They should be guided to developing self-confidence as they execute their duties.

In conclusion, a forensic psychologist is such an invaluable asset that any establishment must seek to have within the organization. This will go a long way in addressing the many issues that employees wrestle with on a daily basis and which also reduce their work output.
