Critical Analysis of Quantitative Research: Results

In quantitative research, the main focus is to provide the users of the research with data that is numerical but representing a wider perspective(Creswell, 2014). The data collected by the researcher is majorly numerical and therefore inductive. This means that the results of the research are deductive. This means that the discussion information is deduced from the numerical data(Vance, Talley, Azuero, Pearce, & Christian, 2013).

The research article under critique uses several statistical tests to analyze the quantitative data. These include Wilcoxon rank sum test and the Fisher exact tests(Coleman, Parry, Chalmers, & Min, 2006). These tests assist in collecting data and analyzing it in line with the objectives and the hypotheses that the researcher initially sets. These tests bring out the outcome measures of patients demographics, pharmacy data, comorbidity index and chronic disease scores to be in line with the purpose of the research. The main strength of this analysis is that it is unbiased since the human error issue is minimized. In addition, the analytical method is quite replicable to different settings. However, one of the weaknesses is that the analytical method can only be understood by research expert and not any other user of the research(Vance et al., 2013).

A sample size of 750 participants has been used in this research(Coleman et al., 2006). This is a sufficient sample size which when divided into two, the intervention and control group is likely to bring out clinically-significant statistical findings related to the comorbidity and the manifestation of chronic illnesses with the transition of care. The research does not have non-significant findings.

In the presentation of the data collected, the researcher does not use figures but only a few tables to visually represent the findings of this research. The lack of figures such as graphs weakens the usability and presentation value of the research. The tables used are also a repetition of the information that is contained in the discussions and hence no new information is expressed in the tables. However, even with these weaknesses, the researcher can use the results to examine all the research questions and hypotheses and hence meet the purpose of the research.
