Pit Bulls

In the article “The Problem with Pit Bulls” which has written by Charlotte Alter, the author writes about the dangers that pit-bulls represent. Dog bites have been a problem of concern in America for many decades. However, over 60% of those attacks can be traced back to a specific breed of dogs, the Pit-Bull. In recent years, the breed has even been associated with fatal attacks and deforming mauls especially targeting children and minors. The author first laments the biased focus on the issue with many reports and articles focusing on saving the dogs rather than solving the problem that the specific breed of dogs presents. The author proposes a solution to the problem and recommends breed sterilization as the way out of the problem. This analysis of the article is based on the thesis that Alter successfully and logically support breed sterilization as the single best solution for the problem with Pit-bulls. The analysis will be based on the merits of the solution as explained in the article.

Breed sterilization is a process of humble the dogs’ natural instinct toward aggression. This is the recommendation that the author wishes to inform the reader about. To make her point, Alter uses logical appeal calling on historical data; like that Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982.  According to CDC report from 1978 until 1998 the pit bull is guilty about the deaths more than another type. “There is not any breed of dog that is inherently more dangerous.” To make her argument strong, she uses logical and emotional appeal.  From her article, it is clear that breed sterilized is a good recommendation for solving the problem with Pit-bulls. First, sterilization will ensure that only the specific selected breeders can breed new pit-bulls which will be trained and controlled better.

The problem of pit-bulls is a major concern that requires immediate and unbiased attention to obtain a solution. From the information contained in this article, the author is very articulate to express and bring out the main problem with the dog breed. The author uses historical and very recent data to show that the pit-bull problem has been there for a long time without a possible solution being explored. According to the research conducted by the author, the pit-bull breed is considered the most dangerous dog breed in history. Fatal and disfiguring attacks and mauling have been reported with major discussions venting but amounting to nothing regarding solution to the pit-bull problem. This makes the exploration of the best solution, as done by the author rather urgent and crucial.

The author of this article has also explored the already failed attempts to reach a solution to the problem at hand. Although the problem has been in existence for many years, the author strategically and logically show that little success has been achieved in dealing with it. First, the author indicates that attempts to put the dogs in confinements have been opposite greatly by the dog owners and agencies which have challenged the debate with the information that all dogs behave as they are treated. The author explores their claims, that pit-bulls are only aggressive when treated inhumanely and successfully disputes this claim using a report from one of the breeders and dog expert who indicates that all breeds of dogs are different and the pit-bull, in particular, tends to be more aggressive and can maul or even fatally attack people when slightly provoked. A second attempt to raise concern for the rising magnitude of the problem was also faced with a major opposition. Even recently, the concerns have been diverted to indicate unfair treatment of the pit-bulls. This diversion of attention led to the popularization of movements to protect the breed and people increasingly got interested in keeping the breed, and this has increased the risk for future attacks.

The author of this article has also addressed the varied perspectives from both the owners and the public regarding the proposed solution. Whereas the public confers with the author’s suggestion that selective breed-sterilization will help reduce the problem of pit-bull attacks, the owners of the dogs are wary of the outcomes of such a move and how this is likely to affect the behavior of the dogs and the relationship that the dog has with the people. However, most of them, including major animal protection agencies agree that sterilization is a better solution than euthanasia and confinement which have led to even more hostility from the dogs and increased incidences of attacks. Moreover, the solution suggested by the author does not prevent breeding of the dogs or lead to the extinction of the breed. In fact, the licensed breeders are allowed to freely breed the dogs without restrictions. However, even then, the dogs should only be released to the public when fully trained in their natural form before being sterilized to reduce the aggressiveness and make them friendly pets.

Breed sterilization is a process that is likely to humble pit-bulls and solve a problem that has been there for decades. It is agreeable from both the perspectives of the affected public and the dog owners and related agencies that pit-bulls are among the dog breeds that accounts for the majority of dog attacks. A solution has however been lacking to reduce the aggression and attacks related to the dog breed while still having the pets around people. The author of this article focuses the attention on the main issue while strategically disputing the diverse views and suggestions as biased and improper. By suggesting that the pit-bulls should be subjected to breed-sterilization, the author of this article successfully brings to the attention of the public not only the problem but also a solution to the problem. It is, therefore, agreeable from the analysis of this article that the author has successfully supported the proposition that breed sterilization is the single best solution for the problem with Pit-bulls.
