Leadership and the Graduate Nursing Role

The quiz is a set of questions that explore the leadership style exhibited at every step within the workplace. I suppose that I am a good leader with exceptional influence on my staff. I believe in the power of team spirit, diversity of opinions and uniqueness of every contribution. I uphold the spirit of tolerance and welcome divergent views before making the final decision. I am flexible in terms of decision-making adjustments to ensure that the organizational goals supersede my personal wishes. I cherish democracy that is blended with delegating duties to realize predetermined goals at a greater efficiency. I also appreciate interpersonal skills, creative and critical thing, and sound communication techniques. Democratic approach is sustainable and helps in building trust and confidence among colleagues and junior workers (Cowden & Profetto-Mcgrath, 2011). Therefore, I pay allegiance to the principles of the organization and work with everybody for the common interests. In that way, I welcome active participation of every member of my team and encourage criticism that helps to filter all alternative options in any decision to yield the best outcome. I also apply proactive approach in order to prevent occurrence of some situations that may jeopardize success of the team.

The leadership traits mentioned above fit into my style. A leader must always influence the thoughts of followers positively. At any time, the decision made should focus on addressing the interest of the entire team. As a democratic leader, I emphasize relentless support to each other. In fact, every person possesses unique skills and competency that, unless discovered, may lie idle and prevent self-actualization. Therefore, I vote for talent search in every individual to improve productivity and boost efficiency. In any case, the mismatch of individual ability against the assigned role has the effect of retarding personal growth, which reflects in overall underperformance in the organization. Although I make informed judgment at every instance on the basis of logic, flexibility towards other people’s opinion may result into better outcome. In fact, I underscore the need for proper planning of events, assigning roles to people commensurate to their potential and encouraging quality delivery. I am strong supporter of democracy with slight delegation of duties in order to achieve organization growth and collective gain.

Nursing is a profession that requires outstanding interpersonal skills, strong leadership style and reliable professional competency. As a graduate nurse, one is expected to blend academic qualifications with learnt management techniques to exercise an outstanding leadership capability. In the contemporary society, nursing practice has shifted from the traditional approach that vested more power to the nurse and integrated the input of the patient for better outcome (Wong, Cummings, & Ducharme, 2013). Besides, interacting with hospital management vertically and with nursing colleagues horizontally requires requisite communication skills. Reconciling the roles of a nurse to give care to patients, sharing with other nurses and reporting to the management constitutes the development of leadership. In essence, a graduate nurse is certified to offer professional care to patients. However, the ability to blend formal and informal interaction is important for engaging the patients. Coordinating various activities in the hospital and being assigned the supervisory role require democratic leadership approach. On top of the acquired skills in nursing, optimal achievement is a function of proactive leadership (Malloy & Penprase, 2010). A graduate nurse needs to involve other team members in a decision-making process. Good leadership also requires a graduate nurse to be an organized person, strict planer and team player.

A graduate nurse needs to be accommodative of cross-cultural aspects of the society. Understanding the reality of diversity in the workplace and exercising tolerance is a practice of long-term gain in the line of duty and personal development (Price, 2009). Progressive career growth in nursing necessitates regular updates with current nursing practices. Besides, inculcating the spirit of team work and converting crisis into opportunities to learn is a true indication of leadership. A graduate nurse must portray sound data, collection and reporting techniques to make informed judgments while making any decisions. Each decision made must reflect the utmost good faith.

My leadership attributes hold better career prospects in nursing. As a graduate nurse, I will be able to portray tolerance towards cultural pluralism in the workplace and the input of each person in the interest of the hospital. I am a team player and will be able to mobilize colleagues and other staff members towards the achievement of set goals. By encouraging others to do their best, I will make a good graduate nurse in promoting personal growth and development of other people, helping them realize their potential. My interpersonal communication skills will help me to influence the will of workmates towards improving the quality of service delivery to the patients. On the side of the patients, listening to them will help in making the right treatment and psychotherapeutic remedy (Willetts, Aberdeen, Hood, & Cross, 2016). My democratic approach will help me gather much information from other people and learn beyond the nursing knowledge. However, my self-discipline will form a strong foundation for the constant improvement in my routine duties. I will also be able to turn mistakes and failures into learning points or gainful opportunities. Delegation of some roles will help me in meeting deadlines and promoting active participation of every team member at the same time.

I will need to learn to be patient. That is my weakness which is important in leadership. As a graduate nurse, accommodating reality of slow responsiveness among some team members in decision-making is important. Besides, self-control is another leadership attribute that I will need to learn. Nursing require consistent learning through attendance of leadership trainings, conferences and organizing outreach activities in the immediate community.
