DIET MODIFICATIONS NIGHT SHIFT NURSES TO PREVENT BREAST CANCER

Cancer is a preventable disease if detected at early stages. Proper diet is one of the practices that can help the reduction and prevention of the disease itself. A healthy diet is not a magic bullet against cancer, but new research suggests it may help. A meal arrangement rich in fruits and veggies and low in starchy carbohydrates may help prevent breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence (Jones, Katapodi & Lockhart, 2015). For nurses who work during night hours or night shift, getting enough time to eat might be a problem; however, a healthy diet is still recommended for them.

Setting enough time to eat should be a priority for the night shift nurses since it also promotes a good eating habit that enhances weight management and improvement in performance at the work place (deHaro et al., 2014). Skipping a meal is also a habit that should be avoided since subjects the body to lose a lot of energy. This makes the blood glucose level to drop, and the concentration of an individual suffers together with a feeling of fatigue and irritation. Glucose is the main source of energy for the brain, and its deficiency is dangerous to the body in general.

The presence of enough hormones in the body is also important in the reduction and prevention of breast cancer. Melatonin is one of the hormones that play a great role in the body. Melatonin is created by the pineal organ, and it is in charge of management of the internal body circadian rhythm. Its production is influenced by a lot of factors such as the amount of light in the external environment; however, diet is a major factor that influences its production the most (Neil-Sztramko, Pahwa, Demers & Gotay, 2014).Apart from the regulation of the circadian rhythm, melatonin enhances the regulation of other body hormones; therefore it is important in cancer prevention and management (Johanson, 2008).

To get enough melatonin in the body, there are types of foods that night shift nurses and other people should eat. These include fruits like bananas, oranges, pineapples, oats, cherries, and tomatoes. These fruits contain different vitamins that aids in the production of melatonin.

These fruits are a great source of energy and a good replacement of dairy. For example, banana has magnesium, vitamin B6 and ordinary multifaceted carbs that aid the production serotonin. Apart from being a good source of vitamin and magnesium, banana is also a source of tryptophan, which is a type of amino acid that encourages relaxation and serotonin construction. These are important nutrients that help the body especially in sending an individual to sleep (Costa, 2010). A good sleep may be an effective weapon against cancer (Jones, Katapodi & Lockhart, 2015). How an individual sleep alters the hormones balance in the body which in turns influence cancer progression. The importance of night sleep is the regulation of cortisol hormone which always reaches summit levels in the morning and declines during the day. Cortisol hormone is one of the hormones that regulate the immune system together with the activity of cells that help the body fight cancer (deHaro et al., 2014).Food is good in energy production; however, in cancer prevention, there some foods that should be avoided to ensure that women are not exposed to breast cancer(Neil-Sztramko, Pahwa, Demers & Gotay, 2014). These include foods with high levels of saturated fats, fatty cuts of meat, pies and sausages, butter, ghee and lard, hard cheese, ice cream, chocolate products, biscuits and cakes.

Supplements are also important in the breast cancer management (Jones, Katapodi & Lockhart, 2015). However, there are many con artists who are in the market to sell their products to the people. These supplements may be dangerous to health and in this case, it is important to know what type of supplements to consume. These supplements include; fish oil that contains omega-3 fatty acid. This helps the body to take in nutrients and fend off irritation. The main content; omega-3 fatty acid prevent cancer and other related diseases such as heart disease. Flaxseed is another supplement that has lignans that are also helpful in reduction of cancer risk. Lignans are phytoestrogens; plant chemicals that imitate the estrogen (deHaro et al., 2014).

Most drinks are used for refreshment; however, not all of them are helpful. There some drinks to avoid as a means of breast cancer management. These drinks include alcohol, drinks rich in caffeine such as coffee and black tea. Taking home filtered water is also important than consuming bottled water that might have been contaminated at the bottling place. Taking minimum caffeinated drinks reduce the risk of brain cancer and increase alertness that is equally important for nightshift nurses (Roman et al., 2014). However, too much of its consumption is dangerous to the body.

In conclusion, the nightshift nurses should have a better healthy living habit such as maintaining and eating different type meals, drinking enough water, have enough time when eating, good planning, be ready for any event and conveying suppers to the work place as argued by Costa, (2010).These are simple tips that will ensure that the health of the nurses is stable and free from the risk of getting exposed to breast cancer not only for the nurses but also other women and men (Roman et al., 2014)
