Dentistry In The New Deal Era

Dentistry is a profession that gained popularity in the 19th century. Although the problem of tooth decay and related dentistry infections had been in existence, much research and better remedial measures were discovered by late 19th century. History of dentistry indicates that crude methods were applied to uproot decayed tooth and the pain was excruciating. In essence, a review of the New Deal era explores the technological advancement in dentistry from 1930 (White,et al,1859). During the presidency of Roosevelt, the economic depression prompted radical measures in monetary, fiscal policy and other legal reforms to cushion the population against effects of mass unemployment. Roosevelt New Era Deals promoted employment of skilled personnel, expanded library services and Dentistry was among the emerging careers. Since then, dentistry has grown to be a critical service in the society, a lucrative career and an interactive job.

Significant recognition of dentistry was realized when The American Board of Orthodontics, the world’s first dental specialty board, was founded in 1930. With such a legal status and intensive vetting of practicing dentists, the profession improved in standards and emphasized patient safety. Besides, there was an increasing research and development to establish effective anesthesia. By 1937, tooth implants had been discovered and marked dentistry breakthrough that revolutionized replacement of removed tooth (American Dental Association, 1922). In essence, the consistent federal funding on sciences to compete against the aggressive Soviet Union in the Cold War era boosted growth of dentistry field.

During the period of early 1930s, Roosevelt served as the 32nd US president as an energetic person with white, shiny smile. However, his sudden death at 62 years prompted medical investigation that pointed towards dental problem. The history of Roosevelt’s oral and dental problem boosted the profession of dentistry as the post-mortem attracted a combined use of technology and human capital (Christen, 2007). Dentists and physicians of 1900’s began to investigate the probable medical causes of his untimely demise. The common practice of extracting all endodontically or periodontally had just gained popularity as a major cause of teeth problems.

Dentistry has been an all-time medical necessity since the agrarian and industrial revolution. The idea is that with increased consumption of sugar, tooth decay plummeted necessitating the services of dentistry. A critical review of past literature shows the far dentistry has come. The pain and shame associated with dental problems characterized the 19th century generation. However, the invention of tooth extraction methods with effective medication significantly restored confidence among patients. It is worth to note that dentistry offer an individual to develop such important traits as tolerance, understanding and empathy. While managing patients, the dentist operate in a partially informal mode to give the patient confidence (The American Board of Pedodontics, 1972). Besides, the spirit to save lives and minimize pain has motivated further research towards efficient and painless treatment process. A lot can be learnt from the transformation that dentistry has gone through. While the problem of dental challenge is prevalent, the passion to treat and eliminate pain helps in delivery of better results. It is important to note that dentistry require positive attitude from learning to practicing. The history of pain associated with it call for a friendly practitioner to put confidence and encourage the patient.

I have learnt that dentistry requires resilience and positive minds from college to hospital. The power of encouraging the patient and proper surgical process are fundamental in this career. The increasing preference of dentistry among prospective college students is an indication of just how the profession has grown from leaps to bounds (American Animal Hospital Association, 1985). It is worth to note that dentistry keeps one informed as the changing lifestyle brings infections that affect more than just the tooth. However, the internal motivate to achieve has seen the medical process friendly.

It can be concluded that dentistry is a great career and has recorded the highest number of enrolments across the world. However, the economic recovery policies initiated by Roosevelt leadership formed the stepping stone on which dentistry sprung to action. I love dentistry.
