Case work and Case Management (Week 4)

My group, week 4, had five members and we presented on the topic of casework and case management. For reference, we used the articles: Engagement by (Furlong 2013) and road to social work and Human Service Practice by Chenoweth and MACulliffe (2015).Given that I always take classwork very seriously, I was very committed to this group and to the completion of the assignment on time. As such I made the initial efforts to converge the first group meeting which did not bear fruit since there was no response from the other group members. However, I did not give up and finally I managed to fix a meeting that was successful after lectures on a Monday.

For the facilitation of our presentation, we did a role play whose scenario was obtained from Furlong 2013 Relationship building. I actively in the play where I acted as a client. My role was to take part in an interview as the interviewee conducted by another group member (Nacho).He was acting as a social work practitioner.

The presentation and the role play have taught me great lessons on how to build and retain relationships when dealing with clients. First, when a client comes into an organization, it is important for the facilitator (social worker) to engage with them to create an environment that makes them comfortable. Notably, it is essential for the social worker to realize that clients are social beings and they should be addressed as relational beings. This makes them feel at ease and breaks barriers to communication .hence the client will be able to open up and talk about their problems.

Next, after the client begins to talk about the purpose for their visit, the social worker has a role of assessing and determining the exact problems that the client has.in order to get maximum output, the client should be given room to speak for themselves. The facilitator needs not to try and act as an agent for the client trying to help them figure out their problems.

Once the clients express themselves fully, the social worker comes up with an intervention plan on how to help them solve the problems they have.in most cases, social workers choose to deal with one client at a time. However, one can also choose to bring in other clients with similar problems. When convening such clients it is very important to wisely decide the right people that will be placed in the same group to avoid conflict of interest. Again the social worker should carefully guard the secrets of each client to avoid losing their trust. Once the problems are fully addressed, the social worker terminates the relationship with clients and conducts a review of the whole process to see if any mistakes were made and come up with solutions for the challenges encountered.

Once our presentation was over I looked in the work done by another group, week 6 and learned the following lessons on crisis intervention on involuntary and aggressive clients. In order for one to succeed on crisis intervention, an established protocol to be followed should be prepared beforehand since crisis can occur at inconvenient times and at odd hours of the day. When a facilitator first encounters aggressive clients a facilitator immediately try to calm the patient down and protect him from harming himself or harming those around him. The facilitator explains to the patient why they are trying to take control and attempts to take the patient away from the crisis .In situations where this is not possible, the social worker takes the option of trying to take the crisis from the patient in a way that will not harm them (Chenoweth & Macauliffe 2015).

As Greenstone and Sharon (2002),puts it, once the situation is calm, the facilitator makes an assessment of the patient to find out what the problem is by allowing the patient to freely express themselves while carefully listening to them as a way of showing that they care and also providing any emotional support required. In case there are many patients in a crisis, for instance a family dispute, each person should be given the opportunity to freely speak while all the other people listen without interruption. Finally the facilitator refers the patient to institutions that can give them aid if they cannot give help themselves. If the facilitator has the capacity to give assistance, follow up sessions are arranged through a consensus between the facilitator and the patient.

On top this, from the presentation another group, week 7, I was enlightened on the fact that perspectives of feminism can be used to get a clear picture of the gender dimension in social work. Feminist social work focuses on women through group work to eradicate the problem of gender inequality (Goldner,et al.1990). Social workers and women focus on areas of commonality to make the projects undertaken a success. Therefore focus on women as victims of violence forms a strong basis on which women and social workers can build relationships. Similarly, feminist perspectives are used to help men understand ways in which they oppress women in families and to help them turn from oppressive behaviors (Gray & Webb, 2013) .In most cases, the contribution that is made by feminism in social work in the country is recognized.
